Interesting outcome to the fracas in the Dewsbury match
www.rugby-league.com/the_rfl/dis ... #advSearch
Dawson-Jones has a penalty notice for one match for running in and punching. Reynolds and Moore, who started the punch up, receive penalty notice of no matches. (??)
Mata'utia a penalty notice of one match, for contrary behaviour, but not charged! Presumably his penalty notice was for standing up, while the Dewsbury player was climbing on his back, after the tackle was completed, causing the tackler to fall off! If they don't roll away................
Incidentally, on that point, in our matches against Toronto and Halifax, we were repeatedly penalised, for not clearing the ruck - fair enough. But how many times were London tacklers found lying behind the ptb, yesterday, even being struck by the ptb and never penalised? A Bob Beswick or Ben Kaye would have tripped over them, or bounced the ball on them, and won the penalty. It would appear that not all referees employ the same thinking on 'clearing the ruck'!

| The ref was poor yesterday particularly with offside and the ruck area, fortunately he didn’t influence the result and ironically his lack of whistle made for a better game.

| The clearing of the ruck areas has been terrible so far this season. The referees are not dealing with this well at all.
Also when there is a break in play, such as when someone knocks on, why does it take so long to restart the game with a scrum?
The flow of the game is lost and it becomes difficult for teams to get any momentum. The Good Friday game against Swinton is a case in point.
The disciplinary decision re Peter Mat'uatia is one of the most pathetic i have ever heard of. Another example of the referee not ensuring that the defence clear the ruck properly, which then results in an unnecessary fracas in which Mat'uatia was the victim.

| The refs seem to have a pet project or two at the start of each season. Last year and this they were zealously penalising players for moving off the mark at the ptb. Like last year they seem to have given up on this now. It's the same story with clearing the ruck. However, I thought the worst aspect of Monday's officiating was the number of forward passes allowed to go unpunished: these were not the usual ie from acting half back, but on several occasions Sammut (or Summit!) got away with blatant ones.

| There seems to be a lot more gamesmanship coming into games, passing into a man on the ground to gain a penalty, making the ruck as messy as possible to slow play. These type of delaying tactics used to happen a lot at contested scrims, which is why we got rid. One thing that could help is stopping that third man come in late when the tackle is complete.

His lack of whistle shouldn't be welcomed to cover his incompetent handling of the game though!

| Totally absurd. Day was climbing all over Mata'utia's back, even after the ref eventually shouted 'held' All Mata'utia did was stand up. Day then fell vertically off his back. He shouldn't have been there at all, when Mata'utia was trying to play the ball! Mata'utia's 'crime' was to attempt to stand up and play the ball. Why didn't Day let go, when the ref shouted held?!

Alan, I have just watched the incident again, he doesn't seem to be fully tackled, but i'm not sure if the ref shouted held. It did look a bit reckless tbh.
If he decides to appeal, then...........
Players can challenge a Penalty Notice (A-C) – in which case the matter will be determined by the Operational Rules Tribunal. A refundable deposit of £500 for Super League players and £250 for all other players must be lodged when submitting a challenge. If challenge is successful, the deposit shall be returned. Challenges to a Penalty Notice can only be made on the following grounds:
- Guilt; or
- Improper Grading of the Offence by the Panel
Unsuccessful challenges will result in a one-match increase in sanction where grounds for challenge considered unreasonable. If player is found not guilty then no sanction will be handed out. A successful grading challenge will lead to a sanction that would have been imposed for the revised Grade.
