Michael Maguire plans to use cutting-edge satellite technology to help get the most out of his players next season.
Warriors' new coach aims to introduce a GPS system that will track how far players run during training – and in matches.
Players will wear tiny, special sensors underneath their kit, allowing Maguire and his coaching staff to monitor their heart-rates – and how quickly they recover from collisions – as well as hydration.
Chairman Ian Lenagan said: "It's the sort of technology that, as a club, we want to be at the forefront of.
"It's like in Formula One. They monitor the cars – we'll be monitoring players instead."

Prepare for a pretty geeky post... I doubt the validity of this system. GPS is in best cases only accurate to around 5 metres and that is with top end gear. In an embedded device the size of what would be needed I'd envisage the accuracy being more towards the ~20 metre mark.
Would love to see the specs of this thing, you could do some pretty cool stuff with the data that is collected.

| Even if this isn't a hoax then what's the point, he's looking at the pitch isn't he? Or is he checking to see if they are in the KFC an the Pemberton/Wigan border or not?

| It gives data to show who's actually putting in the effort in games and training. If someone only makes a few metres with the ball, but has run an absolute ton with a high heart rate, then their effort can't be faulted.

He can't accurately keep track of every player at once, plus he might just be hoping for the Hawthorne effect (i.e peope who know they are being measured tend to respond positively to the attention).

| This kind of stuff is common place in Union and in the NRL I think personally it is crucial for the conditioning coach and other staff to have this information.
In training it is vital so as to target the correct energy systems and training goals.
Eg if you are training for Power you should do this from a fully recovered position, but it is impossible to assess this without information in real time on heart rate etc.
Whats with the title of this thread by the way, its a cracking bit of information but the title of the thread may well mean people do not look at it......I did because i am nosy.
