Some of you may not remember the extended world club challenge that happened in 1997 but it was a total rout for all our sides. No English sides got any further than the quarter finals.
If the same tournament was run today with 22 sides would we be any closer? Our game has improved owing to the imports, coaches etc etc but then again the Australian game has got even better too.
Would any of our clubs stand a chance of winning a tournament like the one that was played in '97?

No, there would be a similar tale of woe.
That tournament was a farce. Saints lost all our games, being ritually slaughtered in most of them and yet still progressed triumphantly to the quarter finals.

Our top few sides would get some results against their bottom few sides but likely beaten by their better teams. 7th and down in SL would get absolutely hammered every game.

Because Wigan are one of the top 4 sides in our competition. If the World Club Challenge was to take place now, I'd rather have Wigan playing for Super League than Huddersfield. |
